Big Bear Discovery Center
The forest's visitor information hub on the north shore

Managed by San Bernardino National Forest, north shore (Highway 38)
The Discovery Center is the Forest Service's visitor centre for the Big Bear Valley, on the north shore of the lake. The agency's Woodland Trail 1E23 page names it as the place where trail brochures are available, and it also appears in the Forest Service's wildflower viewing area listings.
It is the natural first stop of a Big Bear trip: maps, interpretive displays, and the trailheads for the Woodland Trail and Cougar Crest are right there.
Getting there
- On North Shore Drive / Highway 38 between Fawnskin and Stanfield Cutoff.
- Adventure Pass and permit questions are handled by the Forest Service — check their passes and permits page or ask at the desk.
Safety & etiquette
- Opening days and hours are seasonal and we do not publish them — call or check the operator's page before driving out.
Community information — not from an official source
The centre has historically been operated in partnership with the Southern California Mountains Foundation. We could not confirm the current operating arrangement on an official page, so we note it as background rather than fact.
